Cardio exercise: How Much? How Often?
For most elderly individuals, the American College of Sports
Medicine and the Center for Disease Prevention recommend exercising daily at a
low to moderate intensity or 3-5 times per week at moderate to high intensity.
The goal is 30 minutes of continuous exercise, and up to 60 minutes. If you are
just beginning a cardio exercise program, have severe chronic disease, or a very
low fitness level, start with 5 minutes of low-to-moderate activity. Your goal
is to work your way up to a moderate-to-vigorous level that increases your
breathing and heart rate. It should feel somewhat difficult to you, but not
painful. You can still achieve general health benefits with sessions no less
than 10 minutes at a time, as long as they add up to a total of at least 30
minutes on most or all days of the week.
Membership:
Members of the Center for Active Generations are required to
purchase a fitness membership in order to utilize the facilities. Center
membership ($35/single, $50/couple) and a doctor's consent form are required
prior to taking some classes. Medical release forms are available at the
Center's front desk and are required for all classes except Tai Chi. Fill out a fitness membership application at the
front desk. You will receive a separate fitness card that you must show when
coming to work out in the fitness room. Locker room and shower facilities are
also available. Consult your physician before starting any exercise program.

ABC's (Ab/Back/Core):
M/W 9:30 - 10:15 am,
Taking a break. The class will resume in the

If you want a tighter mid-section, better balance and a stronger

back muscles of the body. Through a powerful mid-section and lower

likelihood of back pain episodes, help to avoid back surgery in some
cases and facilitate healing after a back or spine injury. The class
starts with stretching and proceeds to the floor for mat work, using
hand weights and exercise balls. This class is 45 minutes. You must
be able to get up and down from the floor. Participants are
encouraged to go at their own pace. Join Jenny for a fun and
